Pedal Box Redesign

Project type

Pedal Box Accepted CAD design

Date

February 2023

Location

California State University Los Angeles

My outstanding task during my time in FSAE was to redesign the vehicle's pedalbox considering adjustability for various height drivers in the process. The original pedalbox as shown in the images had an offset brake pedal which created a massive safety concern as a driver would have to fully lift their foot off of the gas to brake. I was required to design a set of pedals that could also be adjusted for shifting and slack to avoid having any offset in the pedals. When drafting concepts, I considered cost, manufacturability, simplicity, ease of assembly, and adjustability. From 3 designs I could narrow the pedal box down to 1 design that met all the requirements. The CAD models' screenshot shows a pedal box with adjustable pedal offsets and pedal height that could be adjusted to drivers with varying heights through a teeth and slider concept. Although it never entered production because the club was shut down due to lack of funding and college support, the assignment felt like a success to me as I was able to complete a design that was approved by the extended team to be manufactured. This was also my very first solo CAD project which I journeyed through countless mistakes to create a theoretically functioning product.
